winner : engagement session competition

It’s been nearly a month in the making, but my engagement session competition has finally ended. Two weeks and more than 2,700 votes (WOW!) after voting began, it has all drawn to a close.

As I’ve said from the beginning, voting was only a portion of the overall deciding factors. I took several things into account when choosing both my finalists, as well as my overall winner.

1) Originality of their idea : I loved the ideas all my finalists had. That’s exactly why I chose them. But in the end, I wanted to choose the idea that required the most complexity, the most overall planning and attention to detail… that would supply the most interesting detail shots and overall storyline. I wanted more than a “cute shot”…. I wanted an entire dialogue. A story that could play out with a beginning, middle, and end. And to be honest, I wanted to showcase a shoot that had layers. Some cute, some sexy, some romantic. A shoot that could showcase both my love for weddings, as well as for fashion.

2) Overall Effort : Voting and the Pinterest boards show me one very important thing, that these couples genuinely believed in and were passionate about having fun with their idea and putting in the time and effort to bring it to life. They were willing to gather their ideas, share them with me… reach out to family and friends, gather their support, and have them rally together. After all, the goal of this shoot is to give away one amazing session (as well as an album). It’s easy for people to submit for a free competition, but in the end, who wants to give away something for free unless they know everyone involved genuinely appreciates it, and wants to do their part to make it amazing? These couples did not let me down.

3) Voting : Seeing how much support was lent to these couples, and especially these brides… showed me how well loved they are. What lucky women to have so many people willing to give their time to band together and vote again and again. To gain this much support day after day, week after week, you must be well loved. There was a vast outpouring of votes and comments left on the blog… you don’t gain that much love and respect without being amazing people. And who wouldn’t want to give away such a great prize knowing it’s going to wonderful and deserving people?!

In the end, choosing a winner was no easy task. Each of these couples had hundreds, if not thousands of votes. Pretty impressive. Each of them had an idea that showed their individuality as a couple. Each had a unique story that really shows how beautiful love can be, especially when tested. Each had some pretty amazing inspiration photos on their Pinterest boards (not to mention at least 85 followers each!!) Each… was flat out amazing as a couple.

But, a choice had to be made. In the end, there was one session theme that really resonated for me. Partially for its classic nature that was both romantic and sophisticated, and partially for all the amazing details that could be incorporated into it. Jessica and Chris have a wonderful love story that incorporates the complexity of missed connections, a relationship years in the making, long distances, and the evolution of friendship. It’s a personal story that I think many of us can find relatable. I loved the vintage styling of her idea and all the possibilities that opened up. When I saw her amazing blog “My Baking Heart” I loved how her passion could be incorporated into the styling of the shoot. And when I saw her pin an image of my biggest girl crush, Monica Bellucci on her Pinterest, well… she had me. Truth be told, I felt their theme stepped beyond the comfort levels of what most local brides strive for in their engagement sessions, and that’s what I loved.  That was a big goal for me with this competition… to show brides that you could create something truly unique and amazing… and to challenge them to do just that! So, with many congratulations, I announce the winner of my competition (who also happens to have won the overall vote) Jessica and Chris!! They’ll receive their complimentary engagement session and a custom designed flushmount album to commemorate it!

For all of those amazing friends and family that voted… don’t feel too bad for our other finalists!! They all had such wonderful ideas and did such a fantastic job gathering your support, I couldn’t let anyone walk away empty handed. Honestly, they all deserved to win something!

So, as the runner up, Emily & Eric will also have the chance to bring their idea to life with an engagement session, and a complimentary large format print.

Malia & Luis won’t miss out either… they’ll receive a mini engagement session.

Thank you so much to all of my finalists. I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed perusing your inspiration boards. I can’t wait to take all those ideas I’ve seen you working on and pull them together for three amazing shoots.

Thank you to all of our voters… don’t forget to subscribe to the blog so you can be the first to see when the sneak peeks from these sessions are posted.

Annnnnd… you know how I feel about a post without a photo…

big year : big changes

I know, I know… shame on me. Two months of 2012 over, and I’m just now putting together my resolutions.

2011 was such an amazing year for the growth of my business. Growth is a funny thing… it provides immense opportunities but also immense challenges. Some are more difficult than others to get a grasp on, but I suppose the end goal is always personal growth for yourself and your brand.

Despite my granny tendencies and resistance to change, as I’ve gotten older I’ve challenged myself to better embrace technology and a world that is ever evolving. I literally refused to relinquish the cell phone I bought in 2004 until early 2011. No joke. Sure, sometimes it randomly shut itself off when it decided it was tired of hearing my voice. And yes, the screen was still only two colors. But I, my friends, was born with the soul of a 79 year old man.

Then came 2010. “Woah, you mean.. there is software… that will allow me to build my own website?! And not on Altavista?! STRANNNNGE” (and the fact that I remember Altavista, tells you just how dated my appreciation for technology was.) The fact of the matter is technology makes our lives easier, YOUR lives easier.

I’m still a bit ashamed to say it, but the day I bought my first iPhone was like meeting your first boyfriend. Full of awe and wonderment. Who knew technology could be so easy? Packaged in such a lovely fashion? Make my work look even lovelier?!

In 2011, I updated the design of my websites. As a photographer, so much time is invested in creating a beautiful product, why would we not want to display it in a beautiful way? The goal of the site was increased functionality and accessibility for my brides. A better foundation for being able to supply information. I updated the galleries and photocarts we use… something far more streamlined, far prettier, and with a multitude of functions to expand your ability to connect your images to your social media outlets. My contracts and invoices became completely web based, so you could access your information anywhere. Store it, reach it, and archive it. It makes your experience simpler, more time effective, and it puts everyone on the same page with the same information.

So what is new for 2012?

1) Smart phone compatability : In a continued effort to create an easily accessible environment for you, my blog, site, galleries, and photocarts have already undergone (or are in the process of undergoing) updates to make them completely smart phone compatible. This means more ways to access your information and images, and more ways to share them.

2) The creation of client sites : The average couple that commissions me will typically shoot a bridal session, engagement session, rehearsal dinner, and wedding. This equates to several links for several galleries. And sure, our galleries can be easily sent out by email, posted to facebook, and tweeted, but I wanted to find a solution that created a more concise sharing experience for you without compromising style. So I spent some time contemplating the best way to do this. The solution? Starting this year, each new client that books with me will receive their own “mini site” much like those offered by TheKnot. Packaged in a cleanly styled layout, it will showcase the specifics of your wedding day to share with your family and friends (date, countdown, location, festivities.) In addition, it will contain helpful links and faqs to better assist you when preparing for our sessions or the big day. When each of your galleries go live, rather than having to send each gallery out separately to your family and friends, they will all appear on your own personalized mini wedding site. And ultimately, after your final wedding gallery posts, you will also be able to download every single one of your images directly from your mini site. The goal is to create one location, one resource, that you can rely to access anything and everything related to your wedding photography. It consolidates all of your resources into one simplified, well varnished package! I am so excited to roll these out for you, I truly believe brides will love it, both for the ability to share with family and friends, and for the convenient resource.

3) We’re going green! : Truth be told, being respectful and appreciative of the world we live in has always been a point of interest and concern for me. I’ve long struggled with the paper packaging and overabundance of “fluff” that goes into physical packaging. I admit, I love a beautiful well designed product label. I am astounded with the creativity and level of complexity some come up with to create that perfect branding. But, I’ve spoken to many clients who readily admit that they pull that DVD out of the box… and as pretty as the wrapping and ribbons and tissue paper look… the majority of it ends up in the trash. So, as a photographer, why do so many of us invest so much in this? Because we know clients love to unwrap something beautiful. Understandable and completely relatable. But, is it responsible? And in the end, shouldn’t the loveliness of the final product and images themselves be enough to stand on its own without distracting fluff? My goal in 2012 is to eliminate as much unnecessary fluff packaging as possible. The ease of online accessibility of images and products will not only make this a more convenient, enjoyable, and attractive process for you, but as an added bonus, will allow me to streamline all the extraneous waste created by unnecessary over-packaging. Another plus? Though clients often don’t realize it, all of that packaging is expensive… labels, stickers, raffia, ribbon, boxes, containers, stuffing… the cost adds up. And the majority of us are forced to build that cost into our pricing. Less packaging means less cost for us, which translates to less cost for you. So, in the end, the pursuit of “greener sensibilities” decreases cost, decreases waste, increases the ease of technology, and increases the ease of sharing with friends. Everyone wins! Any and all promotional materials that are still needed (including business cards) are made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials, chlorine and acid free vegetable based dyes, in wind powered facilities.

4) I’m on Pinterest! : Okay, okay… so this one isn’t a big one. But, Pinterest is quickly becoming one of the most versatile social media tools on the internet. It’s an invaluable resource, ESPECIALLY for brides. Such a simple idea, and so many ways to utilize it. For you, it provides endless options to corral, declutter, and organize your inspiration for everything wedding related, from color palettes to table decor. For me, it allows me to create visual representations of ideas, suggestions, and inspiration for portraits. Locations ideas. Prop ideas. Wardrobe suggestions. Hair/makeup suggestions. Brides email me all the time inquiring as to what to wear, bring, or do in preparation for the big day or for portraits. Everyone works better with a visual. So, instead of giving you a written list, why not link you to a pinboard that can really get the ball rolling? These are also pinboards we will eventually build into your faq pages on your “mini sites.” Pretty cool, huh? You can follow me on Pinterest at : http://www.pinterest.com/donofriojessica

5) The elimination of DVDs : In line with our desire to create a product for our clients that is not only “greener,” but also more efficient, readily available, technologically competitive, attractive, more cost effective, and ultimately reaches you far quicker… we are seeking to eliminate the need of DVDs in 2012. This does not mean you’ll no longer receive ALL of your final edits in full resolution. What this means is that you will receive them quicker (by up to two weeks) and more conveniently. Rather than having to wait two weeks after your galleries post for a DVD to be processed, labeled, packaged, picked up, and delivered… you will instead be able to access and download every single image within days of your gallery post… all via your own mini site! These are the same full resolution, unwatermarked images you’ve loved on your DVDs, only available to you weeks quicker.

6) Online album proofing : Like many of our online offerings, this will eventually be available via your “mini site.” You will have full functionality to not only be able to view your album and approve it before it is sent to print, but you will be able to add individual comments to specific images and pages. You’ll be able to scroll through your album page by page, select specific images, and ask for any alterations you desire. All before you go to print! No guess work. You’ll love your album before it even hits the pages of the printer.

In the coming days, I will be breaking down and sharing examples of each of these big changes, one by one. But for now, I leave you with my most heartfelt thanks for your continued kindness and belief in my ability to capture your most precious moments with heart. You have made my 2011 a journey full of rewarding challenges, and 2012 is already set to become what promises to be a year full of artistic growth and newfound rewards.

No post is complete without an image, so here is one that represents the birth of a new year and new and exciting possibilities!!

jessica : the bridals : dallas arboretum

I’ve been corresponding with Jessica since last September, but had not yet had the opportunity to meet her until recently at her bridals. Whether it be a dislocated pinky or the flu getting in the way, our paths and schedules just couldn’t seem to cross. But, finally, at last we were able to meet on the most beautiful of days. You know a girl is going to be drama free and a breeze to work with when she shows up with some Converse peeking out from under that crisp white dress;)

Her heart had been set on the Arboretum, but that flaky Texas weather and days of gloomy skies threatened to stand in the way of her dream shoot. But, when the morning came, you could not ask for a more lovely day. Perfectly blue skies, a light breeze, and temperatures just high enough to warm your skin. We don’t get many days like that in Dallas.

I was so thrilled for her that she was able to get the session she’d dreamed of. Spring must be here!

So, many congratulations to Jessica on her upcoming wedding this month. I hope it is as amazing and beautiful as our sunny spring day.

paper city : bride’s little blue book 2012

I’m so pleased to say that I’ve been featured for the second year in a row in the Bride’s Little Blue Book, Paper City’s annual list of the top north Texas wedding vendors. It’s always so much fun for me when I’m recognized by my one of favorite publications. I actually was not aware they had chosen to include me again this year, so it was an exciting little surprise. If you have not already picked up their February Bridal Issue, you should. It’s an amazing resource for some of the city’s most talented and artistic vendors. Thank you, Paper City!

finalists : engagement session competition

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I received so many amazing submissions for the engagement session competition, but unfortunately, it had to be narrowed down to a select few. I’ve created a Pinterest board for each of the couples where they can pin anything and everything that helps inspire their vision for their shoot. Follow their Pinterest boards, and judge for yourself!

Here is the breakdown of how final selection will be made:

1) Voting : at the end of this post, you’ll find a poll where you can vote on your favorite couple. Voting will remain open until 11:59 February 29th (who knew it was a leap year?!) Voting is limited to only 1 vote per 12 hours, and the poll is set up to not allow for repeat votes within that time. We just want to keep everything fair!

2) Community Support : Feel free to email the link to this post, tweet it, like it, post it, pin it… have your friends and family leave their words of encouragement for your favorite couple here on the blog. The more comments that are left here on the blog for them, the more that will factor into their overall score.

3) My own personal choice on creativity and uniqueness. I chose couples that wanted to have fun, and make it their own. I’ll be following the Pinterest boards I’ve created for them, to see who pulls together the most unique inspiration to bring this shoot to life.

So! Here are the finalists.

Emily & Eric

Their story in her words: “My fiance and I have been dating for three years and recently got engaged!!! We met at Texas tech University where he was playing baseball and I was getting my hospitality degree. I actually hired him at a bellman at the hotel I was working at and the rest is history! He likes to say that I started out as his boss and I am still the boss!:)That is pretty true! Ha! He went on to play professional baseball after college and then just recently started coaching at the college level. We of course are incorporating baseball into our wedding and I have some ideas for our engagement pictures and save the dates!”

Their shoot in her words: “He is all baseball, athlete, weight lifter tough guy and I am very diamonds and pearls and girly dresses! So I would love to do a play on that and do a shoot on a baseball field with him in workout or baseball gear and me in heels and a dress with lots of pearls and a baseball glove! It is so us! I want to use those shots for the save the dates and get one with a base covered in dirt with our date written on it in the dirt. We are going to carry the theme over to our wedding and do a mixture of vintage baseball, diamonds and pearls.”

Jessica & Chris

Their story in her words: “I met Chris through my sister, when they sat next to each other playing the trumpet in sixth grade band. It wasn’t until I had graduated high school and was returning home from a (bad) date, that I noticed him. He tells the story that he was hanging out at my house with my sister and a few friends when he saw me walk through the door. Apparently, he leaned over and told his friend Brent that he would date me one day. Ten years later, we officially started seeing each other… even though it’s pretty hard to see someone when they live 1,400 miles away from you! We spent our first year together flying back and forth from Dallas to San Diego, where Chris was working. Once the opportunity to transfer home opened up, he jumped at the chance so that we could take our relationship to the next level. Another year and a half later and here we are, planning a wedding!”

Their shoot in her words: “I have a deep passion for baking and have been blogging at My Baking Heart for a little over 4 years now. Chris, on the other hand, is an avid golfer… and has been since high school. He’s quite good, too. From the moment we became engaged (and maybe even a little before!), I had the idea for a fun and special engagement photo. I’d like to wear a 40s-era dress, hair to match, a strand of pearls and red lipstick… holding a homemade pie or cake on a pretty stand. And for Chris? He’s dressed in an argyle sweater, knickers and a tam (or a newsboy cap)… holding a vintage wooden driver over his shoulder. It’s totally us and I know it would turn out to be such an amazing photo!”

Malia & Luis

Their story in her words: “I’m from Hawaii and he’s originally from Dallas but spent his high school years in New Mexico. My mom was in the military and we moved around a lot, so when we got stationed in a small town in New Mexico with a population under 20,000 people, I was not very thrilled. I was in high school at the time, and eventually made a few new friends. We met through a mutual friend the night before our junior prom that we were attending with other people. We eventually became friends and then by the start of our senior year we were inseparable. We attended senior prom together, graduated together, and it’s now 8 years later, we have a precious little girl together and we are finally ready to make things official and couldn’t be more excited! We had discussed getting married and didn’t think we’d make a big deal of it.. but while we were visiting my family in Hawaii, we went to the beach and he got on one knee and proposed! I was so surprised!”

Their shoot in her words: “I think an “Opposites Attract” type theme would match us perfectly! We’re different in sooooooo many ways lol. We have different tastes in food, hobbies, music, movies, tc shows, everything! He is originally from the deserts of New Mexico, and I’m from the tropical island of Hawaii. There’s another difference:)But what definitely makes us special is that we never let our differences get between us.. we learn to compromise a lot better since we are so different. So I think an “Opposites Attract” them would be perfect. Maybe he can wear all white and I wear all black.. or vice versa. Or he can wear a shirt of his favorite music artist or sports team, and I wear a different one. He’s a very laid back type of person, and he always says I’m not.. lol. So perhaps we can dress in a way that shows that off.. he can wear something solid colors with a very classic look, like a sweater vest and slacks or something and I can wear something flamboyant, red, pinks, or something.”
